Fort Lee and Fort Eustis Museums represent at the Army Expo

FORT LEE, Va. -- Fort Lee Museums and U.S. Army Transportation Museum staff recently supported the Army Heritage and Education Center’s Army Expo, held Sept. 12-13 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

The Army Expo is the largest public-facing Army event on the East coast, complete with reenactors, exhibits, and demonstrations. The historic tank demonstration was a particular draw this year, with visitors watching a World War II era M4A3 Sherman Tank and other historical military vehicles in action.

The weekend event attracted over 6,000 individual visitors with several hundred stopping by the Army Museum Enterprise tent, which exhibited education collection objects highlighting over 251 years of Army logistics.

The table also included morse code interactives, take-home activities, and a question board, asking “What does the Army mean to you?” Staff spoke with Veterans, civilians, active-duty servicemembers, and Army University colleagues, culminating in a weekend of excellent outreach and relationship building.

Reflecting on the event, Alexandra J. Kolleda, museum education specialist, Fort Lee Museums, stated “we were able to speak with hundreds of visitors, many of whom are outside our usual audience, sharing the Army museums with a wider community.

“It was an inspiration to see our soldiers and civilians come together to put on such an event, to include a demonstration of WWII Tanks by the Wheels of Liberation Foundation in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,” continued Kolleda. “Seeing a Sherman Tank in action definitely added great depth to our own historic collection.”

“It was great to connect with our peers at the Army Heritage and Education Center and see what a great event they can pull off through soldier and civilian connections,” said Marissa Lindsey-Farnham, museum curator, U.S. Army Transportation Museum. “Most attendees were not aware of the different Army museums in Virginia and mentioned they wanted to visit the next time they were down in Virginia.”

Fort Lee, Virginia, along with nearby Fort Eustis, Virginia, is home to four separate Army museums: U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum, U.S. Army Transportation Museum, U.S. Army Women’s Museum, and the Ordnance Training Support Facility. Annually, they host over 64,000 visitors and work continually to educate, inform, and inspire people as to the history of our Army and its’ service to the Nation.

In partnership with the staff and cadre from the Sustainment Center of Excellence and other tenant units, the Army museums are crucial to facilitating both important community engagement as well as supporting Professional Military Education for officers, warrant officers, NCOs, and enlisted troops from across the Joint and Total Force.
